Why Cone Health: Every medical student knows that the fourth-year residency interview season can be emotionally and physically unforgiving. (It certainly was for me!) But after interviewing with the Cone Health psychiatric residency program, I felt something that I hadn’t before: an unusual combination of both surprise and relief. I was surprised by how welcomed I felt during the interview itself – the faculty and residents were superb, kind, and genuinely interested in getting to know us. And I was relieved by how well the Cone Health program aligned with my goals: a small class size with close supervision, an emphasis on community mental health, proximity to my family, a supportive, friendly work environment, and all in a growing, mid-sized city. I can’t wait to get started!

Why Cone Health: Cone Health's emphasis on pioneering patient-centered care and commitment to continuous improvement stood out to me from the get go. After interactions with exceptional leadership and residents alike, it was clear to me that this environment was made to foster real growth. I know there will be extraordinary opportunities ahead to learn, but also to establish meaningful initiatives that will leave a lasting, positive impact. Both the overarching mission of Cone Health to enhance the quality and accessibility of care to all, as well as Greensboro's dedication to diversity and excellence, align with my personal values. I look forward to caring for the patients who call Guilford County home. As a bonus, the area is conveniently located near some of the most breathtaking rock-climbing areas in the Piedmont mountains, like Moore's Wall and Sauratown. You'll know where to find me in my off time!

Why Cone Health: The Cone Health Psychiatry residency program has so many great aspects such as a variety of training sites, leadership opportunities and a close-knit community of smaller class sizes. When I met the attendings, residents and program coordinator from Cone Health, I knew that I would not be alone on this journey of residency. It is evident that there is a strong support system here where people care about both the patients and staff. On top of that, Greensboro is a wonderful city with lots of diverse food options and minimal traffic.

Why Cone Health:  Cone health is close to home for me! I completed college and medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill and wanted to stay in North Carolina for residency training. During my interview, I was impressed by the faculty’s dedication to resident professional development and well-being. I felt like I would be well-prepared for practice with training opportunities at the Guilford County Crisis Center and with the collaborative care model. I look forward to continuing to learn about and improve the mental health of the people in my home state.

Practice Interests: Interventional Psychiatry, Outpatient Psychiatry, Preventive and Lifestyle Medicine, Health Policy and Management

Why Cone Health: My family and I wanted to settle down in North Carolina to be close to our relatives throughout the state. Greensboro is a beautiful mid-sized city with plenty of safe suburban areas – perfect for raising kids. I liked that Cone Health is a newer, community-based psychiatry program with a small and intimate class size. The idea of being part of a close-knit group of residents and joining the first few inaugural classes to shape the trajectory of the curriculum is very appealing.

Why Cone Health: I met Dr. Kumar during an Open House, and we both spoke openly about our visions and goals for integrated and holistic psychiatric care with respect to everyone despite his or her societal status. In that session, as well as during my interview day, I felt seen and knew that I would not only receive the best training to practice in an underserved community but would be able to continue to act on my passions for community involvement and advocacy. I had no doubt that Cone Health would be the ideal program for me. I'm very excited to call Greensboro my new home!

Why Cone Health: During my interview with Cone Health, it was apparent that this program strives for excellent resident education by providing a variety of learning opportunities to a small class size. This allows me to see and try a little bit of everything in the field of psychiatry so that I can find my passion and calling. However, what really stood out to me is the unique opportunity to train in leadership and administrative roles. Lastly, there is also a huge emphasis on ensuring that there is a supportive work environment and that resident wellness is fostered.
