Biography
In practice for more than 40 years, John E. Wimmer, Jr., MD, served as neonatology medical director at Cone Health until August, 2022, and continues as a part-time staff neonatologist. Currently a partner of the Pediatrix Medical Group of the Triad, he has been affiliated with Cone Health since 2003.
His interests include infant driven feeding, prevention of hypothermia in preterm infants, and reducing overuse of antibiotics in newborns born to mothers with possible infection.
He is an avid proponent of the inclusion of parents in the care of their high-risk newborns and incorporated this philosophy in the design of the new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Women’s and Children’s Center which opened in 2020.
Originally from Roanoke, he is married with four children, six grandchildren and two dogs. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, reading, and spending as much time as possible at the beach.
