Cone Health Medical Residency
Welcome to the Cone Health Graduate Medical Education program. We offer a unique blend of high quality medical education within a very supportive, one-on-one community hospital environment. Our long-standing affiliation with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine joins the best of the academic world with the close and personal characteristics of this exceptional community hospital system.
Cone Health is a six-hospital system with four primary care residency programs that include the Internal Medicine Residency Program, the Family Medicine Residency Program, the Psychiatry Residency Program, and a Sports Medicine Fellowship. Our Pediatric Residency Program provides rotations for UNC-CH Pediatric residents along with our Family Medicine residents. We offer 4th year post-resident experiences in OB/GYN for Family Medicine and an Ultrasound Fellowship that offers either a Family Medicine or Internal Medicine track.
The community medicine programs have existed for 32 years, and they are highly respected and have excellent support and collaboration within the medical community. All programs, including the institution, were reviewed in 2009 and received the maximum accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
It is difficult to draw the picture of this entire teaching environment in words, so please come and meet our residents, faculty and staff. We're sure you will find that we are unique and are committed to providing you with a supportive, comprehensive and quality learning experience.
Office of Graduate Medical Education
Cone Health is a multi-hospital system, including full-service medical and surgical care and specialized services in cancer treatment, women's and infant care, and behavioral medicine. The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital sponsors GME programs in Family Medicine with an accredited PGY-4 Family Medicine Sports Medicine program and in Internal Medicine. The academic medical center affiliation for these programs is with the School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, whose Pediatric Department rotates residents each month to Moses Cone Hospital for inpatient and ambulatory experiences under supervision of the hospital's pediatric faculty.
Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Cone Health and the Office of Graduate Medical Education value diversity and inclusion in all facets of healthcare and medical education. In our academic pursuits, professional community, and all the places in between, our pursuit of equity is woven into everything we do. Our mission is to:
- Embrace and celebrate uniqueness, cultivate connections, and stay courageously curious.
- Improve the care provided to underrepresented minorities through research, population health initiatives, and equity in quality care.
- Prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our institution with awareness, communication, social responsibility, and integration of policies and programs to mitigate bias, discrimination, and inequities.
Our faculty and resident program leaders recognize the important role of diversity in creating a collaborative culture. Our GME Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee holds professional development sessions for residents, faculty, and staff to cultivate a continual learning environment focused on issues such as implicit bias and inequity in healthcare. Cone Health and GME encourage team members to be their true selves and commit to empowering expression through opportunities like Inclusion Network Groups, a DEI focused book club, and authentic conversations with our DEI department. It is our belief that caring for our community is strengthened by diversity in culture and life experience. We continue to seek opportunities that attract, support, and retain diverse residents, faculty and staff to care for our patient populations, provide unique perspectives, and empower change in healthcare.
