4 Reasons NOT To Put Off Surgery
In some cases, it can be easy or tempting to put off a surgery for many reasons. However, delaying care can get in the way of your health, quality of life and how well the surgery may work down the road.
Here are four reasons NOT to put off surgery:
- By delaying surgery, you run the risk of harming your body even more. This could make a future surgery more involved and could result in a longer recovery, lessened relief/results, etc.
- If you are putting off a surgery due to being nervous about the outcome, it can make your anxiety worse. Instead, reach out to us to talk to a care team member who can help answer questions you have and soothe your worries. You are in great hands at Annie Penn Hospital!
- It’s likely your provider wants you to have surgery because there’s something causing you pain or discomfort, or putting stress on your body in some way. Delaying surgery means you aren’t living life to the fullest and that’s something we would love to help you avoid!
- If you have concerns about insurance coverage/payment, please don’t let that stand in the way of you getting the surgery you need. Please read the Insurance Coverage section for more information about this topic.
Surgery Preparation: FAQs
If you have an upcoming surgery, you probably have questions about what to expect. If you don’t see your question(s) answered below, feel free to reach out to us to get the information you need.
What can I eat or drink before my surgery?
In most cases, you’ll be able to eat and drink as usual until 10 p.m. the day before your surgery. After 10 p.m., do not eat or drink anything (including water, gum, mints, etc.). In certain cases, this could be different. Speak with your surgeon about your specific case.
Please do NOT drink any alcohol the day before or the day of your surgery.
What should I wear to the hospital for my surgery?
Plan to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to take off and put back on. You’ll be changing into a gown at the hospital.
Please be sure to remove all jewelry/piercings before your surgery. We recommend leaving all jewelry at home for safe keeping. Be sure to also remove dentures, contact lenses and makeup before your surgery. (Your contacts and dentures can be removed at the hospital.)
Should I take my medications leading up to my surgery?
This can differ based on the patient, medication and/or surgery. Your surgeon/anesthesiologist can answer this question for you.
How early should I get to the hospital on the day of my surgery?
Please plan to arrive about two hours before your surgery is scheduled to begin. (If your plan is different, you’ll be told by your care team.)
What information/documents do I need to bring to the hospital with me?
Please plan to bring your insurance card(s), a photo ID and a living will/advance directive (if you have those). If you will be bringing a child for a surgery, make sure you have proof of guardianship with you at the hospital.
Learn more about advance care planning and how you can prepare those documents BEFORE your surgery here.
Where should I park when arriving for my surgery?
You will park in the parking lot closest to the Main Entrance. You will enter the Main Entrance and go to Registration, on your left as you enter. Once registration is done, you will be directed to the surgical waiting room. For assistance parking and navigating Annie Penn hospital, download the MyConeHealth app and use the Find Your Way on Campus feature under the Navigate Our Locations tab.
Will I need someone to drive me home?
Yes, please have a trusted adult drive you home after your surgery. You’ll also want someone to be with you for at least the first 24 hours you’re back home.
What will my recovery look like?
This is something you can talk with your surgeon about before your surgery. Then, after your survery, your care team will give you detailed post-op and discharge instructions along with information about your recovery timeline.
