Cone Health HeartCare Cardio-Obstetrics is located within MedCenter for Women, where women can receive a range of female-specific health care, including OB/GYN care and maternal/fetal medicine.

Our Providers

Our providers are highly trained in cardio-obstetrics, and they provide expert care for any OB-related heart condition. All monitoring, medications and procedures used at Cone Health Cardio-Obstetrics is safe for both pregnant and breastfeeding women. We also work hand in hand with Cone Health Women’s & Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital as needed when it comes to your care and delivery.

Services

  • Pre-pregnancy counseling: If you have a pre-existing heart condition, we are here to help you understand your cardiovascular health, how to prepare for becoming pregnant, how pregnancy will affect your heart health and what treatment can look like during pregnancy and postpartum.
  • Cardiovascular care during pregnancy: Our team helps pregnant patients with cardiovascular issues including:
    • Congenital cardiac defects or disease: These are problems with the heart's structure that exist since birth. They include (but are not limited to) atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD)  and coarctation of the aorta and acquired cardiac disease (such as rheumatic heart disease or pulmonary hypertension).
    • Arrythmias: Irregular heartbeat
    • Peripartum cardiomyopathy: Heart muscle weakness that begins about a month before childbirth and lasts about five months afterward
    • Cardiac disease secondary to other medical conditions, such as lupus or diabetes
    • Connective tissue disorders, including Marfan Syndrome
    • Advanced maternal age: Pregnancy over the age of 35
    • Obesity BMI > 35
  • Fourth trimester cardiovascular care: Our team will also care for you after you give birth by monitoring your heart health closely as your body recovers from pregnancy and childbirth.

If you develop a heart condition during pregnancy, we will continue to care for you during this time. Together, we’ll develop a long-term plan to reduce your risk of heart disease with frequent care, treatments and lifestyle changes.
