City of Greensboro and Cone Health to Build Health Care Ecosystem in East Greensboro

The move is part of closing the “life expectancy gap.”

Greensboro- The City of Greensboro and Cone Health plan to bring a host of health and wellness services to east Greensboro. The goal is to close the life expectancy gap in that area.

Data shows that people who live in certain areas of the city die sooner than people who live in other areas. In some cases, 15 years sooner. That is mostly due to more chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity and little control of them. This is an effort to change those disparities.

“We all share the social responsibility to help alleviate health care disparity in our community,” said Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan. “This partnership with Cone Health will have generational impacts for East Greensboro residents.”

Cone Health will partner with the city to bring a health and wellness component. Plans call for:

  • A 6,000-square-foot community wellness hub at the Vance Chavis Branch Library. The hub will house a clinic, a telehealth and a digital services room and education space.
  • The Windsor Chavis Nocho Community Complex will host a Sagewell Health & Fitness medical fitness center and education space.
  • The Warnersville Recreation Center will be home to other health and wellness programming options through or with the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department.

Greensboro voters approved a $135 million bond referendum last July. Part of those funds will go toward the Windsor Chavis Nocho Community Complex. The other renovations will be completed using other dollars.

Some of the Vance health hub’s programming will start in 2024, but the full physical renovation of the facility will be after Windsor Chavis Nocho is completed.

The partnership with the City of Greensboro supports Cone Health’s goal of closing the life expectancy gap by 5 years over the next 5 years. “There are people right here in our city, who come to our emergency departments many times a year with diabetes or high blood pressure that is out of control and life-threatening,” said Cone Health CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle. “Our partnership will give people the tools to manage their health, adding years of life in the process.”

Earlier this year, Cone Health signed a Memorandum of Understanding with N.C. A&T State University and the University of North Carolina Greensboro to partner in clinical education, research and strategic workforce development to help alleviate health disparities and the health care needs of people across the Triad.
