Medical Complex Coming to East Greensboro Area
The facility will be built in the area that once was home to Carolina Circle Mall.
Greensboro – Cone Health plans to bring a large health and wellness complex to Pyramids Village near Cone Boulevard and U.S. 29 North in Greensboro. Cone Health has purchased roughly 31 acres in the shopping center anchored by Walmart.
The $10.75 million transaction is part of Cone Health’s pledge to invest $150 million to improve health and increase life expectancy in underserved areas. Residents in nearby communities have more cases of high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and other treatable or preventable ailments to the point that it reduces how long they live. Last year, Cone Health stated its goal of “reducing a 15-year gap in life expectancy by five years over five years” through its CATCH 5 in 5 efforts.
“Closing the life-expectancy gap requires a community-wide effort. But it begins with being able to get medical care and wellness advice that’s convenient and affordable,” says Dr. Mary Jo Cagle, president and CEO, Cone Health. “This project has been years in the making and residents in East Greensboro and surrounding communities will benefit for decades to come.”
Work on the project begins this fall with meetings with community partners and residents about services to include in the facility. “We learn much by taking time on the front end to listen to our community members, to health care consumers and others about how they want to obtain health care. Would they find certain services as better options than other services? More space for wellness classes or workout areas, extended hours, a pharmacy?” says Deno Adkins, senior vice president of ambulatory & consumer services for Cone Health.
No matter what takes shape, the complex will be built with convenience in mind. Ideally, the facility will allow a customer to see a provider, get blood draws, X-rays and other medical tests in one location. It may include a pharmacy where prescriptions can be picked up on the way out. Depending on community needs, it may include wellness aspects such as teaching kitchens and classroom space. More importantly, we know the combination of services will be designed to help keep residents healthy.
The location along U.S. 29 is near the Greensboro Urban Loop. This opens the medical complex to people not only living in east Greensboro, but to underserved rural areas of southeast Rockingham County and northwest Guilford County.
