What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Joint replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is a common treatment option for people who suffer from chronic joint pain and mobility limitations due to arthritis, injury, or other conditions. Our surgeons will remove the damaged parts of your hip, knee, elbow, or other damaged joints and replace them with an artificial joint made of metal and plastic. The new joint is designed to move in the same way as a natural joint, allowing you to regain mobility and reduce pain.

Depending on your unique situation, our surgeons will determine whether to perform traditional open surgery or minimally invasive surgery for your replacement. Your recovery time and rehabilitation plan will depend on the technique that is used and your overall health.

Common Joint Replacement Procedures

Cone Health OrthoCare surgeons specialize in a variety of joint replacement procedures including:

  • Total hip replacement - replaces the entire damaged or arthritic hip joint with a prosthetic joint made of metal, plastic, or ceramic components.

  • Total knee replacement - replaces the entire damaged or arthritic knee joint with a prosthetic joint.

  • Total shoulder replacement - replaces the entire damaged or arthritic shoulder joint with a prosthetic joint.

  • Partial knee replacement - replaces only the damaged portion of the knee joint with a prosthetic component.

  • Reverse shoulder replacement - involves reversing the position of the ball and socket in the shoulder joint, typically used for severe rotator cuff damage or arthritis.

  • Elbow replacement - replaces the damaged elbow joint with a prosthetic joint made of metal and plastic components.

  • Ankle replacement - replaces the damaged ankle joint with a prosthetic joint made of metal and plastic components.
