Point of Care Ultrasound AOC

Goals and Objectives

  • Understand basic physics of ultrasound technology
  • Gain competency in acquiring and interpreting diagnostic POCUS images in a variety of clinical situations, understanding its utility in primary care.
  • Incorporate diagnostic POCUS into clinical workflow
  • Gain experience with US guided injections
  • Gain experience teaching POCUS acquisition and interpretation to medical students and residents

Clinical and Educational Opportunities/Curriculum

  • 1-2 months of POCUS electives
    • Obtaining common primary care diagnostic US views demonstrating competence at selecting appropriate depth, frequency, and focus for each scan
    • Work with cardiac/vascular, abdominal sonographers and specialists in Sports Medicine and Obstetrics
    • Completion of modules, required readings
  • Participation in regular diagnostic and procedural POCUS workshops led by POCUS-trained faculty in a variety of specialties including but not limited to SM, EM, FM, IM.
  • Present at least once at quarterly ultrasound case conference
  • Have access to handheld and laptop-based US in clinic and on inpatient wards
  • Mentorship with POCUS-trained faculty with ongoing image review
  • Opportunity to attend national POCUS conference
  • Opportunity for publication
  • Participation in teaching diagnostic POCUS to residents at noon conference

Future training

  • Opportunity to obtain further training in primary care-based fellowship as part time hospitalist or outpatient primary care.
