Cone Health Summer Extern Program

Apply your classroom learning to a hands-on clinical setting with Cone Health’s Summer Extern Program. You’ll benefit from the knowledge and guidance of experienced registered nurses as you work together to care for patients.

Student Nurse Summer Externship

The externship is up to seven weeks long. During this time you will:

• Work alongside an experienced RN and support staff. Relief opportunities are available post externship.
• An opportunity to experience acute care settings outside of the classroom.

Extern at a Leading Hospital

You’ll be assigned to one of the five Cone Health hospitals: Annie Penn Hospital, Behavioral Health Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital including the Cone Health Women's & Children's Center at Moses Cone Hospital), Wesley Long Hospital or Alamance Regional Medical Center. At each of the facilities, you can expect a collaborative workplace that provides high-quality patient care and supports your education, professional growth and leadership development.

Clinical Specialties We Offer

Indicate your clinical preferences when you apply to the program. You may request placement in:

• Critical Care (ICU)
• Emergency Department
• Intermediate Care
• Labor and Delivery
• Medical-Surgical (neurosciences, orthopedics, renal, telemetry, etc.)
• Operative Services
• Behavioral Health
• Community Health

Potential Candidates for the Summer Extern Program

You may apply for the Nurse Extern Program if you are:

• Must be enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) program.
• Listed as a Nurse Aide I and II with the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry and North Carolina Board of Nursing before the program begins (You may apply while waiting for Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA, listings.)
• Available to work up to 40 hours per week and you will work the schedule of your preceptor.

The application opens in October prior to the upcoming summer.

1. Complete the Nurse Extern Application at: careers.conehealth.com: Nurse Extern
   1. Internal candidates must complete the application through the Internal Job Opportunities portal.
2. Submit the following:
   1. Copy of your college transcript (official or unofficial) to nursingrecruitment@conehealth.com
   2. Three references, including one from an instructor. References should send the completed form to nursingrecruitment@conehealth.com
   3. Proof of NA I and NA II (may not have this at the time of interview, but MUST HAVE prior to starting)

After the Externship

After completing the externship, you may stay on as relief staff.
