Residency of Maternal-Child Nursing

What You Will Learn

Grow your skills and knowledge as a maternal-child nurse as you improve your assessment and critical-thinking skills through interactive learning strategies. You’ll also gain insight into Cone Health’s family-centered approach to pregnancy and birth care.

What To Expect

As a new graduate registered nurse in the Residency of Maternal-Child Nursing, you’ll participate in:

  • 14 week orientation which will include about 24-32 hours on your department and 12 hours of specialty classes each week focusing on fetal monitoring, care during labor and birth, newborn care, breastfeeding support and perinatal diabetes
  • Opportunities for continuing education hours
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program™ certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Opportunity to shadow experienced nurses in lactation support and procedural areas related to your department
  • Clinical orientation can take place on the following units: 
    • Women’s & Children Center at Moses Cone Hospital
      • OB Specialty Care (high risk antepartum and postpartum care)
      • Maternity Assessment Unit
      • Labor & Delivery
      • Mother/Baby (postpartum)
      • NICU
      • Pediatrics
    • Women's & Children's Center at Alamance Regional
      • Labor & Delivery
      • Mother/Baby
      • Special Care Nursery

After Orientation

After completing the 14-week orientation in the Residency of Maternal-Child, the professional development classes will start. You will continue your learning with monthly paid workshops and time away from the hospital engaging in fun and rejuvenating activities with fellow RN Residents and a mentor leader.
