Get clinical experience and grow your knowledge of psychiatric and mental health care at Cone Health’s Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing. You’ll gain experience that prepares you to skillfully and confidently care for patients experiencing behavioral health and substance abuse issues.

What You’ll Learn

Improve your critical-thinking skills and your ability to assess the mental health needs of your patients as you work across a variety of behavioral health departments and programs. You’ll also develop your aptitudes for listening and communication and enhance your ability to build good relationships with patients and families.

What to Expect

As a new graduate registered nurse in the Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing, you’ll participate in:

  • Core classes in psychiatric-mental health nursing, with the opportunities for continuing education hours
  • Critical incident response team (CIRT) training
  • Clinical orientation through the adult unit and child/adolescent unit at Behavioral Health Hospital and Behavioral Medicine Unit at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Each week, you can expect to spend about 20 hours in clinical activities and 20 hours participating in residency-specific activities.

After Orientation

After completing the 14-week orientation in the Residency of Behavioral Health Nursing, the professional development classes will start. You will continue your learning with monthly workshops and paid time away from the hospital participating in fun, rejuvenating activities with fellow RN Residents and a mentor leader.
