PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Our PGY1 Community-Based residency program is intended to give the resident experiences in community, specialty, and ambulatory care pharmacy. Experiences will include promoting patient care services, increasing community collaboration, building relationships with healthcare providers, improving patient outcomes, and learning to build sustainable clinical services.
Structure:
Our residency will consist of longitudinal and block rotations that will be completed throughout the entire year (12 months). Typical rotations will consist of:
- Community Pharmacy – 8 hours per week for 12 months
- Specialty Pharmacy – 8 hours per week for 7 months
- Specialty Pharmacy Clinic – 8 hours per week for 3 months
- Ambulatory Care – 8 hours per week for 4 months (2-month blocks)
- Practice Management – 8 hours per week for 7 months
- Transitions of Care – 8 hours per week for 7 months
- Block rotations – 40 hours per week, last 3 months (1 month required, 2 months electives)
Rotations:
- Orientation – various sites (1 month; block; 40 hours per week)
- Community Pharmacy – Community Pharmacy at MedCenter High Point/Wendover Medical Center (7 months; longitudinal; 8 hours per week)
- Specialty Pharmacy – Central Services Pharmacy (7 months; longitudinal; 8 hours per week)
- Specialty Pharmacy Clinic (Pulmonology/Rheumatology) – LeBauer (3 months; longitudinal; 8 hours per week)
- Ambulatory Care – Community Health and Wellness Center/Western Rockingham Family Medicine (4 months; longitudinal; 8 hours per week for 2-month block at each site)
- Practice Management – Community Pharmacies (7 months; longitudinal; 8 hours per week)
- Transitions of Care – Moses Cone Transitions of Care Pharmacy (7 months; longitudinal; 8 hours per week)
- Heart Failure Stewardship – Moses Cone Hospital (1 month; block; 40 hours per week)
- Elective(s) – (2 months; block; 40 hours per week)

Rotations take place at several clinics within the Cone Health network area (Alamance, Guilford, Forsyth, Rockingham, and Randolph counties).

Residency Obligations:
- Staff every 3rd weekend and once weekly in a community pharmacy
- Complete a residency research project (flipped model)
- Business plan
- Continuing Education Presentation
- Evidence Based Medicine Presentation
- Teaching Certificate Program (optional)
