Message from the Director

Thank you for your interest in our program!

Cone Health is a not-for-profit healthcare delivery system providing care across a 6-county region in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Our system encompasses over 5 hospital campuses, 6 ambulatory care centers, and over 120 physician practices. Our system also sponsors Triad HealthCare Network, an Accountable Care organization, and HealthTeam Advantage, a Medicare Advantage plan.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Cone Health and Moses Cone Hospital builds upon a rich history of pharmacy education- Cone Health has been involved in residency training since 1968! This program focuses on providing post graduate education to individuals interested in careers in ambulatory care practice settings.

With both longitudinal and block rotations, graduates of this program will have built relationships with patients, providers, and clinical staff through numerous practice settings across the care continuum. Graduates will develop into clinicians that promote the use of evidence-based medicine but understand the complexities of inequitable delivery systems, therefore be positioned to help patients navigate the junction between evidence and the real world to achieve healthcare goals and improve health outcomes.

Program Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Program Overview and Rotations

Our PGY1 pharmacy residency program is intended to give residents experiences across the health system, including in ambulatory, inpatient, and community pharmacy settings. Learning opportunities are also available in non-traditional rotations, including in leadership and management, employee health, and managed care.
