Message from the Director

Cone Health has been involved in pharmacy residency training since 1968 and we take pride in our long-standing commitment to clinical pharmacy. The philosophy we follow each year is to keep the residency learning experiences diverse yet challenging and have them build upon the strengths of each individual resident. Together we will design a training plan around your knowledge, skills, and interests. This plan will provide opportunities for you to be an active rather than passive learner. Our goals include teaching you how to use evidence-based medicine in making patient care decisions, how to meet the medication-related needs of patients, as well as to help you foster the development of many professional relationships that you will treasure for years to come. Lastly, in being a part of the innovative and caring culture at Cone Health, you will be actively involved in making decisions that are aligned with our mission and vision while working on teams committed to creativity and individual initiative. We embrace change that comes with new ideas and multidisciplinary collaboration that keeps our residency training programs strong and at the forefront of pharmacy practice.

Program Purpose

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Education Competency Areas

  1. Patient Care
  2. Practice Advancement
  3. Leadership
  4. Teaching and Education

Program Structure and Overview

PGY1 Overview

Moses Cone Hospital hosts eight PGY1 residents each year.

This comprehensive program provides training experiences in the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in an integrated health-system. An individualized training plan, based on the resident's entrance level of knowledge, skills, and interests, is developed and adjusted throughout the year. While developing competence to provide patient-centered care in multiple patient care environments, PGY1 residents acquire substantial knowledge required for skillful problem solving and strengthen their professional values.
