Advanced Radiation Therapy for Skin Cancer
In most cases, your dermatologist will lead your skin cancer care. Depending on your condition, he or she may recommend radiation therapy:
- As a primary treatment
- After surgery to destroy any remaining cancer cells and help prevent recurrence
- To treat skin cancer that has spread to other parts of the body

High Dose Rate (HDR) Surface Brachytherapy
Your care plan may incorporate brachytherapy if nonmelanoma skin cancer appears on an area where your body curves. With this advanced, noninvasive treatment, you receive targeted high-dose radiation through catheters and a shield placed directly on your skin. Many brachytherapy treatments can be completed in fewer sessions than external beam radiation therapy treatments.
Skin Care During & After Treatment
Radiation therapy for may cause red, itchy and/or peeling skin. Ask yourdoctor about prescription and over-the-counter skin care products that can help alleviate these side effects.
