Advanced Imaging and 3D Mammography Locations

Take advantage of Cone Health’s high-quality mammography services at one of Cone Health’s seven imaging locations. We also offer mammograms through our convenient Cone Health Mobile Medicine Unit. Regular screening mammograms can help you detect breast cancer before symptoms develop. Diagnostic mammograms investigate areas of concern after a screening mammogram reveals abnormalities or you experience symptoms such as a lump or nipple discharge. Cone Health offers diagnostic mammograms at Annie Penn Hospital, Norville Breast Center at Alamance Regional and in partnership with The Breast Center of Greensboro Imaging.

All of our exam rooms are private, offering you a comfortable place to prepare for your mammogram and then receive your scan with one of our caring technologists.

Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammograms)

Effectively identify breast cancer with Breast tomosynthesis (3D) mammography available at all Cone Health imaging locations. During this exam, an X-ray machine takes multiple pictures of your breast. A computer then assembles these images to create a detailed 3D image that our specialized breast radiologist can examine layer by layer. 3D mammography is especially important for women with dense breasts.

Clinical & Technical Expertise

Feel confident that you’ll get the most accurate mammogram results possible at Cone Health. Our caring, specially trained technologists help you position yourself for the best-quality images. Your results will be read by a board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologist, and then double-checked by our computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) software.

Breast Ultrasound

Your doctor may recommend a breast ultrasound if you have dense breast tissue or if your screening mammogram reveals an area of concern. This painless, noninvasive test uses sound waves to create a picture of your breast tissue.

Image-Guided Biopsies

If your doctor needs to remove a small piece of your breast tissue for further testing, ask about our minimally invasive, image-guided procedures, including:

  • Stereotactic breast biopsy – Uses a hollow needle and guidance from a special machine to remove cells from a suspicious area in your breast
  • Ultrasound guided core needle biopsy – Employs a hollow needle and guidance from an ultrasound machine to remove cells from a suspicious area in your breast
  • Mammography-guided needle localization – Uses a needle and guidance from a special mammography machine to place a thin wire at the spot in your breast that needs to be removed during a surgical biopsy
  • Radiofrequency identification (RFID) tag localization – Uses radiofrequency technology to pinpoint accurately the spot that needs to be removed during a surgical biopsy

Accredited & Certified Breast Imaging

You can trust Cone Health for safe, reliable and high-quality mammography because our facilities are certified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Find ACR-accredited breast ultrasound and breast ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy at Norville Breast Center at Alamance Regional and at Annie Penn Hospital.

Support If You Are Uninsured or Underinsured

Mammograms are important for all women to receive, and so we offer three ways to gain access to these scans even if you are underinsured or uninsured. Some of the qualifications for these options differ a bit, so be sure to read each offering’s description. Feel free to reach out to us with clarifying questions about any of them. (Contact information is listed within each option below.)

Mammography Scholarship Fund

Access financial assistance for your annual screening mammogram through Cone Health’s Mammography Scholarship Fund. You may qualify if you:

  • Are age 40 or older
  • Have a primary care or OBGYN provider you have seen within the past year
  • Don’t have insurance
  • Don’t have Medicare or Medicaid
  • Have a household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level

To apply, download and complete an application for the Mammography Scholarship Fund. For more information, call us at (336) 832-0849. You must submit a new application each year.

Financial Support for Diagnostic Imaging

For uninsured or underinsured patients who meet certain criteria, the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program can cover breast exams, Pap smears, screening mammograms and recommended follow-up such as diagnostic mammograms and breast biopsies.

We offer this program at the following locations, which differ from our standard mammography screening locations:

  • Cone Health MedCenter for Women (Greensboro, NC)
  • Cone Health Cancer Center at Alamance Regional (Burlington, NC)
  • Cone Health Cancer Center at Annie Penn (Reidsville, NC)
  • Cone Health Cancer Center at Asheboro (Asheboro, NC)

Unlike with the Mammography Scholarship Fund, the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program offers support to patients regardless of whether they have a PCP or OBGYN they have seen in the past year.

If you’re experiencing symptoms, such as a lump or nipple discharge, and meet the criteria listed on this page, contact the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program at (336) 832-0849 to schedule an appointment.

Qualifying patients who are diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer or certain high-grade lesions will then be eligible for Medicaid to pay for their cancer treatment.

Pink Ribbon Fund

The Pink Ribbon Fund is another way for uninsured or underinsured patients to receive funding for mammogram screenings.

Then, if your mammogram exam results in a breast cancer diagnosis, you may be eligible to receive additional support through our Pink Ribbon Fund. This fund gives breast cancer patients access to diagnostic procedures they may not otherwise be able to afford. It also provides for breast cancer therapy essentials and can give assistance for basic needs when patients are uninsured or underinsured.

To learn more about the Pink Ribbon Fund, please contact us at (336) 832-0858.
