X-Ray
The X-ray department at Cone Health is often the first stage of care when a patient comes into the hospital with an emergent injury or when trying to understand the cause of pain in the body.
X-rays are able to provide fast results to give providers a glimpse into what’s going on inside a patient’s body.
A provider may call for an X-ray to look into:
- Any bone or part of the patient’s body
- A long-term cough (chest X-ray)
- Injuries to the back
- Cancer staging
- Joints and ligaments
In addition to standard X-ray images, Cone Health offers fluoroscopy (or live X-ray). Fluoroscopies provide continuous X-ray images to look into something like a patient’s swallowing function, for example. X-ray at Cone Health is also available for lumbar punctures, allowing the provider to clearly see what they’re doing throughout the procedure.
Things to Consider Before Your X-Ray
Some patients worry about radiation exposure during an X-ray, but rest assured an X-ray only emits a small amount of radiation into the body, and it is a safe procedure.
You may need to change into different clothing for your X-ray. If that is the case, you will have access to a private area to comfortably change.
