Stay Active Safely: Summer Sports Injury Prevention

Playing pickleball on court.

As we welcome the summer solstice, many are eager to spend more time exploring the outdoors. But with fun in the sun comes an increased risk for injury. Learn how to stay active safely and avoid injuries during common summer activities in this WFMY 2 Your Well-Being conversation with Dana Brooks, DO, with Cone Health OrthoCare Greensboro.

Steps to Prevent Injuries

  • Start with a dynamic warm-up before activity. Try jumping jacks or running in place to raise your heart rate and loosen your muscles.
  • Stay hydrated! Begin drinking enough water the day before activity to avoid dehydration and overheating.
  • Build up your muscles' endurance by incorporating yoga or strength training into your regular schedule.
  • Listen to your body. If you are in pain or exhausted, don't push it. Allow yourself to rest.
  • Make sure you are exercising or playing in an area with even terrain. Avoid potholes, loose branches or divots in grass.
  • For parents of young athletes, over-exercising can cause injury. Encourage your child to participate in different sports throughout the year for more holistic training.

When to Stop

  • If you're experiencing pain beyond a couple of days of muscle soreness, or if you're in pain during activity, stop and seek care.
  • A pre-existing injury can be re-injured or exacerbated into a more serious condition if you neglect a full recovery.

How to Treat Injury
