Would You Know If Someone Was Having a Stroke?

Doctor showing patient MRI of brain

"His wife knew something was wrong when she asked him on the phone what he wanted to eat, but he couldn't speak in full sentences." Every 40 seconds in the U.S. someone, like 37-year-old Galin Sellers, experiences a stroke.

May is American Stroke Month and one of our experts, Katyucia De Macedo Rodrigues, MD, interventional radiologist in the Triad and member of the Cone Health Medical and Dental Staff, is here to make sure you can spot the signs and symptoms of a stroke.

Risk Factors Matter More Than Age.

Strokes may be more common in older adults, but it can happen at any age, including infants. Those at an increased risk include anyone with:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiac disease such as heart failure or atrial fibrillation
  • Sleep apnea
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Drug use
  • Previous stroke
  • Family history of stroke

Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.

B - Balance: sudden loss of balance or coordination

E - Eyes: sudden change in vision

F - Face: sudden weakness of the face such as drooping

A - Arm or Leg: weakness in the arm or the leg

S - Speech: sudden difficulty speaking

T - Time: it is time to call 911 if you see any one of these symptoms. Do not drive to the E.R.

Make Changes Now to Prevent a Stroke.

  1. Manage high blood pressure--the leading cause of stroke
  2. Manage Cholesterol
  3. Exercise regularly
  4. Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  5. Reduce alcohol consumption
  6. Quit smoking and vaping
