What You Need to Know About Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer affects one in seven men, but getting screened makes it highly curable. In this 2 Your Well-Being discussion with WFMY News 2, Dr. Theodore Manny, a urologist in the Triad and member of the Cone Health Medical and Dental Staff, answers common questions about prostate cancer and explains the importance of getting screened.
1. Age - Chances of developing prostate cancer increase rapidly after age 50.
2. Family History - Having a first-degree relative (father, son, or brother) who has had prostate cancer more than doubles a man's risk.
3. Race - Black men are least likely to get screened, leading to advanced stages of prostate cancer when detected.
Symptoms
Prostate cancer is often asymptomatic, so when symptoms do appear, it usually means the cancer has already spread to other areas and is incurable. Symptoms can include blood in urine, pain in the bones and difficulty urinating.
When to Get Screened
Beginning at age 45 until 75, men should be screened annually with a PST blood test and exam.
