Start your RN career with Cone Health Residency of Critical Care and enhance your ability to care for patients with life-threatening conditions. You will continue your education and gain hands-on clinical experience so you can confidently join the nursing team of an intensive care unit (ICU) or other high-acuity area.

What You’ll Learn

Gain specialized knowledge, skills, clinical decision making, and hands-on experience in the best interest of your critically -ill patient. You will also learn how to promote a healing environment and support and educate your patients’ families or designated decision-makers.

What To Expect

As a new graduate registered nurse in the Residency of Critical Care Nursing, you’ll participate in:

  • 14 week orientation in critical care and high-acuity nursing, which will include about 24 hours on your department with your preceptor and 12 hours of specialty specific education.
  • Opportunity for continuing education hours
  • An advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) course and certification
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) certification
  • High acuity, medical and surgical simulation scenarios in our patient simulation lab
  • Opportunity to shadow experienced nurses or critical care team members in areas related to critical care
  • Hire directly to one of the critical care areas at Alamance Regional Medical Center, Annie Penn Hospital, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital. Critical Care areas may include:
    • Cardiac ICU
    • Trauma/Neuro ICU
    • Medical-Surgical ICU
    • ICU/Stepdown
    • Mixture of patient diagnoses

After Orientation

After completing the 14-week orientation in the Residency of Critical Care Nursing, the professional development classes will start. You will be expected to continue your learning with paid monthly workshops and time away from the hospital participating in fun, rejuvenating activities with fellow RN Residents and a mentor leader.
