Internal Medicine Center - Residency Information

Staff at the Internal Medicine CenterThe Cone Health Internal Medicine Center is the home of the Internal Medicine Residency Teaching Service.

Located within The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, the Internal Medicine Center offers ambulatory care patients convenient access to full hospital services. The Internal Medicine Center physicians provide primary medical care regardless of financial status.

Physical Resources

The Internal Medicine Center houses 21 exam rooms, a conference room with video support, two faculty-resident consultation rooms, seven physician documentation offices, three specialty care offices, a staff/physician lounge, and a lab.

The front office, medical records and telecommunication areas provide full registration, check in/out, appointment, and electronic medical record informational services. Appointments are made based on an "open access" system, which provides both same-day physician access and future appointment availability for both acute care and continuity care.

Clinic Scheduling

Two to eight Internal Medicine residents staff clinics every morning and afternoon, supervised by one or more faculty physicians. Attending faculty also conduct direct patient care clinics when not teaching or providing supervision in the inpatient and ambulatory care settings.

Clinical patient care staff are assigned according to physician and patient needs and include six registered nurses, two certified medical assistants and two nurse techs. Telephone triage is provided by registered nurses in collaboration with attending and resident physicians whenever the clinic is open and by on-call residents after hours.

Front office, medical record and telecommunication services are provided by four full-time patient access specialists.

Specialty Services

  • Laboratory: Two certified phlebotomists provide expert venipuncture services, point-of-care testing, and an extensive knowledge base regarding testing and ordering procedures

  • Dietician Health Coach: A certified diabetes educator/registered dietitian health coach provides full-time support, education, consultation and self-management coaching for clients, staff and physicians.

  • Anticoagulation: Services are offered by a Doctor of Pharmacy during one clinic session each week and when needed.

  • Doctor of Pharmacy: Our pharmacist and pharmacy technician team provide medication adherence coaching, medications assistance support, chronic care and transitions of care medication management support.

  • Behavioral health counselor: A behavioral health counselor offers free in-person and telehealth counselling for a broad range of issues including depression, anxiety, bereavement, substance use, chronic pain, and insomnia. This counselor also triages and connects IMC patients to psychiatric services as needed.

  • Virtual behavioral health: A behavioral health counselor affiliated with system-wide psychiatric support offers free virtual counseling and crisis evaluation services.

  • Opioid Use Disorder Clinic: Buprenorphine treatment program is offered by FDA wavered faculty members.

Administrative Support

The Internal Medicine Medical director & Practice Administrator comprise the leadership team and help to coordinate services among physicians, patients and staff as well as to provide direct patient support/care as needed.
